Papier Mache
I bought 36 inch balloons and spent quite some time out of breath inflating them. Then over the course of about 2 weeks I added layers to each balloon after mine and Luke's big papier-mache session where we got the majority covered. There was one you can see that cracked, there were too few layers of newsprint on it however I managed to fix it surprisingly easily with loads of masking tape.
I felt this was the most effective method as I wanted them to appear DIY, having that hand crafted imperfect quality emphasises the overall metaphor of personal imperfections being normal but the fact it's not normal our 'online personas/ lives' are so perfect. For instance even with the one that broke you can somewhat make out the tape underneath the spray paint, like someone applying makeup to patch themselves up almost.
Spraying
Using spray-paint gave a more even coverage and doesn't disguise the uneven surface and 'imperfections'. I left them out to dry which took a lot less time then it would've done had I painted them, it probably would've also cost more in acrylic paint, costing being a factor I was trying to reduce wherever possible, as well as time.
I did spray one of the lemon faces that I had initially planned to hang up against the green screen in the studio however I ran out of spray paint and the shoot was the following day so ran out of time, as I'd ordered the can online and was unsure about quantity. We then planned to use the lemon heads in the studio instead as a prop, keeping it consistent as we weren't going to have any 2D lemons in any other shot.
