Family lemon head portraits to be hung on the wall for the house party scenes, painted in acrylic on mini canvases.
Lemon Heads
Bearing in mind this is just round one of the papier mache task of making 5 giant lemon heads!
Every night I've sat on my floor (which I've covered in plastic bags and newsprint) and added to each of them, scared that if they're not thick enough they won't be able to support themselves and I'd rather be safe than sorry. I bought 500 big sheets of newsprint for £15 which is more than enough.
So these heads are essential for the music video, I want any extras wearing these if their character is engaged in checking social media/ on their phones. I also thought it would be a great shot to have Ben with one of the lemon heads on, in my spare room of my house which we only use for parties as it's pretty baron and creepy.. having minimal lighting bouncing off the giant head whilst he plays bass which is a focal instrument throughout the song.
In between layers I need to let the heads dry and when I think they're thick enough, slowly let the air out by pin pricking them; then paint them. I want them to create a strong visual identity that Ben could potentially continue throughout other of his songs or performances, as these lemon heads are such a strong icon in this video; even down to his clothing:
Clothing
I bought a fabric pen which was really cheap and effective! Ben bought a jacket from the charity shop as well to wear as part of the outfit over the lemon shirt which I painted the same lemon faces onto.
^ I wanted the design of their faces to be fluid with that of the album artwork I did so as to emphasise this visual identity.
Custom Shirt
Customised with fabric Pen
Custom Jacket
Hand painted using fabric paint, black outlines done with fabric pen over the top. The fabric paint I already owned which helped reduce cost as this can be pricey stuff. They came out really well, I showed the rest of the team and Ben especially loved them.
"Aids development of lemon head characters"
"consistent visual, more recognisable"
