Digital Development

In the first image you can see I originally forgot to consider the x-height and was just altering the serifs. I also found that at a 45 degree angle they were too far slanted, so changed the angles to 20.

I aligned all the letterforms on an x-height, and aligned the ascending and descending serifs using grid systems and rulers, I had to elongate some letters so they aligned. The font then appeared far more uniformed.

Alterations were made to my initial ideas in terms of the beaks, I originally was going to have them mirrored in smoothness, for example looking at the 'G' the beak on the left side was supposed to be replicated for the other side however this disjointed awkward appearance I really favoured and felt suited the context.

I found it initially very confusing using Illustrator as this was my first time using it for a project, however I quickly got the hang of it and could easily change serifs after doing so for the first few letters and became at ease with the software.

Having finished my alphabet, I wanted to put it into context. I mocked up an article relevant for political context and used my sarcastic typography for the heading, emphasising the tragedy of Donald Trump winning the election. I chose the phrase 'Freedom of Speech = terrorism' which is not quite word for word what Trump once said, although it was implied that we're not 'allowed' to arrest certain people preaching terrorism as this is considered freedom of speech. Whilst he strives to make America 'great again' he seems to have little to no understanding of human rights, ironically. He was the perfect subject to write about in this alphabet.

I found this to be a perfect representation of where this sarcastic alphabet would be used, alongside the first paragraph, showing an example of the kinds of language used alongside/ with this alphabet; the sarcastic statement as well as the heading itself uses exaggerated, dramatic language. I chose to use a comment about 'Freedom' not only to emphasise the irony of the statement, but also so I could incorporate the F from the start, implying we're F***** in terms of the context, the use of the umlaut will hopefully indicate a change of vocal intonation; highlighting to the reader this is a sarcastic message.
