Having recently tragically lost my friend and house mate at just age 20, I thought it was only right to channel my energy into organising something to celebrate his work and passion. Ned Smith suffered from Cystic Fibrosis and was very passionate about the cause, he studied photography here at Leeds Arts University and the response to the exhibition has been amazing. Organised for the 25th November at the Lending Room (above the library pub), the exhibition will feature Ned's photography, celebrating works that I've gathered from his years of taking photos.
Works include pictures he's taken all around the world, from India to Istanbul, Leeds to Italy. Upon entry I plan to have a handout of Ned's article on India, travelling there three times Ned bonded with an Indian man Ravi, on his latest trip he met Ravi's children. Ravi sells jewellery on the beaches and Ned photographs this and his children playing. Coming back to uni he wrote an article and asked me to do the layout for this. I plan to print this as a handout, around 100 copies, to give to people upon entry after they've payed £5 entry fee, which goes straight to Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
Choosing which charity was obvious, Cystic Fibrosis Trust stood out to me especially thanks to their branding, spreading awareness with the aid of simplistic informative design.
Social Media: Invites Out
Around 320 people are either 'interested' or 'going' on facebook which is incredible (although hopefully not that many people show as they won't all fit in!!). The response is really heartwarming and I feel positive it's going to raise loads of money for such a worthy cause. Organising this has been quite time consuming and stressful, not because there's loads to do but more the emotional toll to be honest. I'm worried about neglecting the rest of my work load especially my dissertation, I'm trying to balance multiple different things in my life currently and have been finding it tough. Having something positive to look forward to has really motivated me in other ways though and enabled me to keep going and come into uni.
I originally just uploaded an image of me and Ned as the cover picture, I just wanted to ensure I got everyone to save the date, which is far more important in this instance than the fluidity and aesthetics. I knew then that I needed to make posters and a cover photo for the facebook page.
