Music Video Brief Research

Ben asked for some fish eye shots. This initially made me think of Busta Rhymes' 1998 video for 'Gimmie Some More'. Especially thinking of the vibrancy of the song, I really like the surreal elements which makes me think about set backgrounds. It would be great to have giant bright visuals in the background; these can be achieved through Luke's graffiti. For other shots I can consider colourful lighting in a party setting, which is the gritty kind of aesthetic Ben was after, however as his music isn't very 'gritty' I need to consider a balance.

We drew further inspiration from BlabberMouf for the fish eye effect:

The fisheye on this is incredible, not tacky as fish eye can often be. Luckily Ben has given me creative freedom so fish eye shots are only a suggestion, we will have to experiment. Speaking to Luke he could potentially do this "It's all about bending the video" I'll leave this up to him..
If possible it would look awesome as a shot to have someone walking around what looks like the whole world with a superimposed lemon for a head, whilst he walks around on his phone.

A real source of inspiration I've found in terms of a fun vibrant video is Kali Uchis- After the Storm ft Tyler the Creator:

The direction and visuals in this video are amazing, the colour palettes from the furniture to clothing are playful, the retro style is very fashionable and current. I love the more surreal elements of the video however, faces coming out of the grass and the animated intro including Bootsy Collins on a cereal box. This gives me ideas for animated lemon heads on top of people's faces in the music video, just like I have included on the album artwork. This would add another dimension to the take over of technology as their faces are digitally reanimated... as lemons.

Throughout rapper Tyler the Creator's music video he frequently uses this theme of body mutations, from the video Rella where he's featured as a centaur:

Or in NF (Ned Flander) with his head super imposed on a baby's body:

Thinking about using fruit or representations of fruit.. I found Mr Scruff's video for Music Takes Me Up a great reference point for how I want to animate lemon heads over people's heads in the house party shots, an extended metaphor for being sucked into social media as they all sit there on their phones. This idea of togetherness whilst being completely disassociated, alone should be the core focus throughout these shots.

I like the sketchy, hand rendered feel to Mr Scruff's video, giving it a much more naive, innocent feel, I'd like to replicate this vibe as although the song actually conveys a serious message, the tone is light hearted and humorous, the aim is to visually make light of a saddening situation.
