Brief 1: Change of direction / Further Research

I initially wanted to make a video outcome however I really feel that within the time scale it's not plausible as I wanted to film at events, of which recently I haven't been able to go to for a multitude of reasons. I considered going back to concepts of something more sculptural, I looked back at what it was that defined Jump Up, and was brought back to the inclusive vibe created, surrounding clothing and identity.

Identity I feel is the most important factor and most powerful point to focus on, many other scenes are soundsystem and drug influenced, however the Jump Up crowd is easy to spot in terms of clothing especially. I made my own 'starter pack' to aid my research:

Including

'man bags'/ drug pouches - "coke ket pills mandy..."
nike airmax -"those creps are fire bruv"
gunfingers -these and middle fingers are the number one dance move for your hands
cdjs -perfect for every Jump Up bedroom DJ, don't forget to live stream your set on Facebook!
SASASAS hat -merchandise from a group who are pioneers of Jump Up

Gunfingers Candle by Candle Hand

I love this gesture candle however picking something like this by itself isn't necessarily specific to Jump Up and it's commonly used throughout genres of bass music.

I do love the contrast of the candle, something so fragile and typically feminine, with the gunfingers gesture which is usually administered for 'filthy drops'.

I want to experiment with some form of contrast as I'm tackling an issue of sexism within the scene, it seems only right I use a medium like textiles.

Drug Map of London created by collecting baggies

Dan Giannopoulos:

"I'm kind of drawn to subjects that I don't necessarily understand myself, so – to me – these bags that I find are kind of just pinpoints of activity that I don't see on my day-to-day – these hidden activities."

I also have a collection like this of decorative baggies I started collecting when I was younger and thought was a cool hobby, I've never laid them out like this but it would definitely be interesting to deconstruct the designs. I feel however just focusing on baggies isn't enough in terms of the specifics of this sub-genre, this could be relevant to many genres that are particularly bass heavy.

Therefore I'd like to somehow incorporate this into the sculptural outcome but not have it as the main aspect, perhaps something more clothing based would be appropriate.

This has me thinking that perhaps the 'man bag' or 'shotters pouch' which is essentially just a cross body messenger bag but is always sportswear or designer branded should be the focus. Drug dealers use these to carry around their drugs at the rave, along with their portable charger, chewing gum and sunglasses.

Obviously whilst they're shotting (selling) beans (pills), they'll be pulling their best bass face:
