Brief 2: Initial Design Concepts

Considering a more simplistic minimal aesthetic, I played on the context of sensory stimulus. Often mental health is represented in this way but it's usually quite literal and garish with brains littered with typography and ears flooded with multicoloured type and so forth.

I made some simple symbols which I thought could be used as some kind of emojis which seem to fit the context especially as the name is 'chat room' suggestive of a digital outcome. However I want to avoid this being too prominent, I like the anonymous feel of these vectors but I want to similarly avoid it appearing too clinical or digital, as it could easily be confused as an online chat room as opposed to a physical room to chat in which is obviously what I'm establishing.

I've been considering a more physical outcome, inspired by the sculptures from CALM on the ITV tower. I have the idea of representing the above literally, but just isolating the typical counselling chair, as well as having audio files, edited so the track is a montage of different mock counselling sessions/ 'chat room' sessions. However this would mean I'd have to edit audio which I'm fond of doing, however I know I will get overexcited by this, getting wrapped up in something that won't achieve the marks.

I really like my use of typography however and feel I will experiment with this disjointed theme more, the concept was to replicate something millennial are familiar with, being the typography used on MSN messenger, it furthermore emphasises the anonymity people associate with digital chat rooms, but trying to incorporate this into real life.

MSN messenger
A simpler time/ nostalgic for target audience, familiarity

This basis for the typography I feel is fitting with the context, it removes the threat of the design looking too clinical and pushes for a sense of familiarity, an association with happier times during childhood is often used as a counselling technique. One which has always stuck with me is to imagine yourself as a child and consider saying or thinking the same hurtful things you do now. It doesn't fit right, something quite powerful could be using children as models. This would be quite difficult to organise however as I don't know any children well enough and most importantly it may become un-relatable.
