Lazy Gear: Tracksuit Design

Ralph Lauren
Playboy x Supreme

Drawing inspiration from all over logo prints like those featured above I thought the tracksuit bottom design might be better off contrasting the cargo trousers more outlandish design, by simplifying design the tracksuit will furthermore become more of a versatile product that can be worn with a wider variety of things, as tracksuits are usually supposed to. This all over print will also be associated visually with more upmarket brands like Ralph Lauren, these iconic designer trousers denote some form of status and wealth whereas the Lazy gear tracksuits will challenge this, giving a more affordable edgy option which thanks to the fabric are also a lot more versatile and comfortable.

The tracksuits I've purchased have zip pockets which is another brilliant feature, whenever I shop for jackets I always try buy them with zip pockets as when I wear them out to parties, clubs etc. I frequently loose all my belongings, so having something practical is essential without having to compromise on style. Therefore having zip pockets on your trousers means you don't even need to carry around a coat or jacket to hold your things, giving you more freedom. This is also ideal for those exercising in tracksuits, running, skating and so on as your belongings will be safe.

However due to the zip and side hem being quite chunky, my original idea of having the logo printed down the side panel is problematic, hence the need to re-design. I drew further inspiration looking into Supreme's printed trousers, the tracksuits in particular caught my eye as they challenged the normality of 'comfort' design, bearing in mind my target audience is often those who wear streetwear or just joggers for comfort (I know I wear them to uni most days) so this new aesthetic of comfort will be interesting, testing the conventional plain design. This is why I chose a grey tracksuit, to emphasise this contradiction of standard tracksuit design as grey is the most popular colour worn.

Trying mock up variations of this design out on the actual trousers I bought, I'm gaining a greater understanding of what I want. I feel the logos printed all over the trousers is the look I want to go for as it's contemporary and a twist on the current recognisable fashion, however to make it more statement I need to have the logos printed larger than those on the Ralph Lauren and Supreme trousers as I feel their logo is more iconic and recognisable, Lazy Gear is obviously just starting up and is also more detailed in terms of design so wouldn't look as effective that small.

I also however really liked the addition of the logotype on the last design so intend to incorporate this into the second design. This would further aid getting the brand name out there with the logotype and the logo on the trousers, strengthening brand identity as intended. Tying these together, I've produced the design and screen positive which would look like this:
